a piano in my pillow
THEATRE MONNOT (BEIRUT 2012)
I could not sleep that night
Swirling in the bed
A sound came out from the pillow
A sound is coming out ! …
There is a piano in my pillow
And there is not much difference
Between a pillow and a cloud.
The performance was based on the concept of dreams and their influence in portraying reality. It was an improvisation between light and sound, with a mutual understanding, between Vladimir and Alaa, on what improvisation was.
Alaa, who had been working on lighting design as a breathing entity since 2010, transformed a series of dream stories into designed light. Vladimir improvised music, and in this particular performance incorporated sounds. He transformed whatever he received from the lighting design into sound. The stories and ideas were the outcome of both Vladimir and Alaa.
In this sense, dreams were transformed into light and light transcended into sound; at some points, the sound even derived the light. This experiment on the relation between light and sound, and the power of such intangible yet influential elements in our lives, formed the core of this ongoing collaboration, which was the first of its kind in Lebanon.
It is important to note that Vladimir had not seen the designed light by Alaa beforehand, and Alaa had not heard the sounds created by Vladimir beforehand. These two elements met on the day of the performance.
